Discover Rowing
For adults 18 years and older, must be able to swim.
Discover Rowing through the YMCA´s "Learn to Row" class. The classes are held twice a year in June and July. This weekend-long clinic is held early in the morning on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Our goal is to introduce the new rower to the basics and fundamentals: a rowing machine teaches the basic stroke along with on-the-water sessions. These classes will be taught by our new rowing coach and experienced rowers.
On the first day of the clinic we watch a safety video, and we cover the basics, including important terminology such as the various parts of the boat. Also included in this overview is instruction on how to carry the boat safely from the boat house to the dock. Once at the dock you will learn how to place the oars in the oar locks and step in and out of the boat.
Saturday and sunday offer opportunities for practice on the water. A key part of our instruction is recording the participant's stroke and watching the video back at the boat house for critique and additional instruction.
After the weekend session we hope you fall in love with rowing and decide to join the Rockford YMCA Rowing Club.
JUNIOR PROGRAM
13 - 18 YRS, must able to swim
This year we are offering a Junior Program coached by our new rowing coach Teresa Logemann.
Practice starts June 13 and runs through July 31,
Monday - Friday 6:30 - 8:00 am at the Boathouse by the Whitman St. Bridge.
The Junior Rowers will have races on:
July 9-10 @ Chicago
July 31 @ Minneapolis
and don't forget about our own Head of the Rock Regatta on October 9.
